Cancer Rehab through exercise

Certain forms of exercise can help you regain strength and mobility after breast cancer treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

The NZBCF provides funding to assist people with breast cancer to take part in exercise rehabilitation programmes (conditions apply). We provide funding for both PINC  (formerly known as Pink Pilates), a programme tailored to an individual's needs during treatment and Next Steps, group-based exercise sessions over ten weeks (suitable for after treatment).

In the first instance, discuss with your specialist whether you're able to resume physical activity. The programme uses manual physiotherapy, clinical pilates and resistance training.

DURING TREATMENT: Ask about funding for PINC Cancer Rehabilitation (formerly Pink Pilates) – 4 individual sessions with a physio (conditions apply)

PINC Cancer Rehab is suited to people who are recovering from surgery and going through treatment. The programmes are delivered by certified Cancer Rehabilitation Physiotherapists who assess each patient individually for physical impairments and effects of their treatment. They then work with each patient to create a rehabilitation programme to suit their stage in recovery.

The programme caters for all ages, levels of fitness and mobility and aims to:

  • Optimise physical and functional recovery
  • Ease pain and muscular tension
  • Regain strength and motility
  • Increase energy levels and improve breathing
  • Strengthen core muscles and improve posture
  • Improve physical functioning and maintain independence
  • Reclaim body confidence and control
  • Reduce treatment-related side effects
  • Shift focus from illness to wellness

NZBCF also provides funding for men with breast cancer to attend STEEL Cancer Rehabilitation.

Women who have had risk-reducing surgery for high risk breast cancer gene mutations may also apply for funding.
