Leanne's last Christmas wish

Leanne Smith’s bucket list was simple.  To spend Christmas with her family and to celebrate her 42nd birthday in January.  Sadly, Leanne lost her battle with breast cancer on Saturday November 9th with her family around her.  She told her husband Micheal, “I love you’ then slipped away.

Leanne (pictured right) wanted to share her story in the hope it would save lives, and encourage giving towards breast cancer education.  Her generous spirit shines through in a letter she wrote to us, just weeks before she died.

  Rebuilding strength after surgery?
Women who’ve had surgery for breast cancer often struggle to regain upper body strength and mobility. To help address this, the Foundation is delighted to announce funding for 85 women to each have five subsidised sessions (valued at $260) of individualised physiotherapy with the PINC Cancer Rehabilitation Programme (formerly Pink Pilates). Some conditions apply but women who would have found it financially difficult to access the programme can now do so.  It’s available in most major centres.

Thank you very much for October!
Thanks to your help, the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal was one of our best ever raising $770,000 for breast cancer education and support. In addition, around 170 'good sorts' ran fundraising and awareness events around New Zealand and 700 organisations went Pink for a Day®. We are so grateful for the support of everyone this October.

• New research targets aggressive cancers
Thanks to you, the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation has committed $200,000 across two major New Zealand based research projects at Otago and Auckland Universities. The projects aim to understand effective drug treatments for triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), an aggressive cancer that particularly affects younger women.  The Foundation, together with the Breast Cancer Research Trust and Health Research Council,  has also committed a further $400,000 towards innovative breast cancer research here in New Zealand.
