Mammograms and younger women

A mammogram is not usually recommended for women under 40 years of age, as their breasts tend to be denser than older women. This can makes it difficult to see small changes on a mammogram image. An ultrasound scan (which uses high frequency sound waves) may be recommended instead.

During an ultrasound scan, a gel is put on your breast and an object called a transducer (or microphone) is moved over the skin. This is the same machine that is used to see the baby during pregnancy. An MRI scan of the breast may be recommended if more information is needed.
